Conservation in Action

Conservation has always been at the heart of Trowunna. We champion the protection of Tasmania’s unique wildlife through hands-on action and powerful educational experiences.

Trowunna plays a leading role in breeding species that are declining in the wild, most notably, the Tasmanian devil. As the most successful Tasmanian Devil breeding facility both historically and today, we proudly share our expertise through our specialised Tasmanian Devil Training Courses, helping others contribute to the survival of this iconic species. Our work also extends to vital in-situ conservation projects for the Tasmanian devil and the Spotted-tailed quoll.

Our Tasmanian Devil Conservation Grant Fencing Project is now complete and fully operational. This state-of-the-art, bio-secure fencing allows our devils to participate in the ZAA–DPIWE insurance population of the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program. Within these diverse new enclosures, designed to comfortably house up to 38 devils, our team works daily to ensure each animal receives optimal enrichment, stimulation, and care.

For more than 37 years, animal welfare has been our highest priority. Our devils are exercised and monitored as part of a rigorous wildlife management program that supports their health, behaviour, and long-term wellbeing.

The Role of Zoos

The role of the modern zoo reaches far beyond simply displaying animals for curious visitors. Today, zoos and aquariums around the world embrace conservation as one of their core purposes — protecting wildlife, preserving biodiversity, and inspiring communities to care for the natural world.

As proud members of ZAA, participating institutions are actively involved in a wide range of in-situ conservation projects that support species survival in the wild.

Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary stands as a living example of this mission. Our rich, biodiverse environment — home to thriving native flora and fauna — reflects the philosophy and values championed by ZAA and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Every day, we celebrate the powerful role modern zoos can play in safeguarding wildlife for generations to come.
